4 Clear Signs That Indicate Your House Needs Restumping

Posted on: 21 November 2018

There are people that prefer to make their home foundations using wooden stumps. These stumps can offer your house support for a very long time. However, these stumps can be affected by extreme weather conditions and soil erosion, and they are prone to wear and tear. Timber can also deteriorate if it is infested by pests such as termites. If the stumps weaken, they will eventually affect the foundation of your home. This calls for restumping, whereby you replace the old wooden stumps with new ones that are stronger. However, you may not be in a position to tell when your house needs restumping. The following are some of the signs to look out for that indicate you need to replace your stumps.

Uneven Floors

If your floors are uneven, it is a clear indication that the timber stumps of your home have started to rot. However, you may not be in a position to notice the uneven floors with your naked eyes. You can notice this when you are walking in your house. You will feel as if you are walking uphill or downhill. You may also use a marble to tell if your floors are uneven or not. Roll a marble and watch its movement on the floor. If the marble does not roll one way, then the floors are uneven. You should get a professional to replace your stumps before it leads to the collapse of your foundation which will in turn be expensive.

Moisture

If you live in an area where it rains frequently, then you should look out for moisture signs on your foundation. You should check the underside of your house for these signs. Termites are mostly attracted to moist wood. Therefore, if you do not replace your stumps as soon as possible, termites will eat up the timber and damage the foundation.

Instability

If you notice that your doors and windows do not shut properly, then your stumps could be having an issue. If the doors produce a creaking sound whenever you are opening or closing them, this is not something you should ignore. This could be as a result of damage by moisture. This instability shows that you should get new stumps.

Decay

There are some signs that can easily let you know that your stump is damaged. During your regular inspection, you may notice decay on your wooden stumps. Once you notice this sign, you should get professionals to replace the stumps because ignoring it will damage the wood further over time.
